Cowater Begins Implementation of Major Health Initiative in Malawi News

21 October, 2016

Cowater International Inc., in partnership with Plan International Canada and the Society for Obstetricians Gynaecologists of Canada, is very excited to announce the launch of the “Integrated Pathways for Improving Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (InPATH)” project in Malawi. This four year, CAD 25.8M project will be undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada (GAC). The initiative will aim to reduce maternal and child mortality in two districts of Malawi by strengthening local health systems for improved delivery and utilization of gender-sensitive maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) services. Activities include: 1) training facility and community-based health workers on the full MNCH continuum of care; 2) establishing and/or rehabilitating water supply systems, hand-washing stations, sanitation and medical waste management systems at rural health facilities; 3) building the capacity of local health governance structures and promoting mechanisms for increased citizen engagement; and 4) developing and rolling out a mobile birth registration system, in support of national civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) priorities. Results will be achieved by scaling-up evidence-based MNCH interventions and global best practices and strengthening partnerships (government, private sector, NGOs, academia), with a focus on women and girls in rural and underserved areas. The initiative will contribute to saving the lives of women and children, with a total of 373,000 direct and 1M indirect beneficiaries.
