June 2011: Cowater Wins Contract for Capacity-Building Work in Afghanistan
Cowater recently signed a contract with the Afghanistan Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW) to improve rural livelihoods through strengthened integrated water resource management and agriculture development in the western region. This 2½-year Asian Development Bank-funded project will provide capacity building and formal training to increase the technical and management competency of officials and staff of the Ministry as well as stakeholders involved in Integrated Water Resource Management of Afghanistan’s Western River Basins.
A key project component will be the provision of training for the Ministry’s Program Management Unit and other project staff in MEW and the Ministry of Agriculture Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the irrigation and agriculture institutions in the target areas. In addition, Cowater will work closely with Herat University to develop a continuing education program that will bridge the gap in undergraduate and graduate education in relevant engineering and agriculture disciplines.
