February 2011: Death of Mark Baron, President and Founder of Cowater International Inc.

It is with deep sadness and a sense of loss that we announce the passing of Cowater’s Founder and President, Mark Baron, on February 17, 2011.  Mark was one of the three founding partners of Cowater and was President of Cowater International Inc. and Cowater Alaska Inc. at the time of his death.  Mark dedicated his life to helping others worldwide and was recognized for his contributions to international development over the last five decades. While his employees and colleagues will remember him for his strong leadership and guidance throughout the years, he will also be remembered for his generosity and commitment to people around the world through his leadership and management of more than 300 projects worldwide.

Mark will be sorely missed and always fondly remembered by everyone associated with Cowater.  As long-time friend and co-founder of Cowater, Dr. Michael McGarry, noted in his eulogy, “He was loving, caring and at all times full of integrity – the quality he sought most”.

BARON, Mark John (M.P.A, M.S., B.Sc,) Peacefully on Thursday, February 17th, 2011, surrounded by family, Mark Baron passed away at the Ottawa General Hospital. Beloved husband of Kilby-Ann (nee Macdonald). Loving father of Shaun (Jane), Kilby (Michelle), Peter (Kim), Jennifer (Benjamin Fieldhouse) and David. Proud grandfather of Paul, Kilby, Katherine, Scott, Elisabeth, Benjamin, Grace, Morgan, Grant, Jessica, Robert and Andrew. Dear brother of Bryce (Jackie) and Walter (Elsie). Brother-in-law and close friend of Allan Macdonald (Caroline). Loving uncle of many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Peter Baron and Magdelina Heiser and brothers Herman, Reinhard and Arnold. Mark was one of six boys raised on a prairie ranch outside of Mankota, Saskatchewan, He graduated from the University of Alberta, the University of Illinois and Queens University. Mark Baron dedicated his life to international development, working with communities around the world. As the owner and president of Cowater International Inc., Mark provided leadership to the company and expertise on development projects. He also managed water projects in many countries including Peru, Ghana, Honduras and Cameroon. As President of Cowater Alaska Inc., he worked to bring water and sanitation systems to remote northern communities. He worked for CIDA for 13 years in the Caribbean Division. He began his career as an Engineering Professor, working at the University of Alberta, Khonkaen University (Thailand), University of Zambia, University College of East Africa (Nairobi, Kenya), and Yaba College of Technology (Nigeria). The family would like to thank the staff at the General Hospital for their excellent care and support. Friends are invited to the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor) Tuesday, February 22, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church Sandy Hill, 317 Chapel Street, Wednesday at 11 a.m. Contributions in memory of Mark Baron may be made to the Harry Durance Foundation for Education (Bangkok) or an international charity of your choice.
