Celebrating Nelson Mandela International Day News

18 July, 2024

On the occasion of Nelson Mandela International Day, we honour Nelson Mandela’s commitment to social justice and poverty alleviation, promoting women’s rights and gender equality, and advancing peace, stability and dialogue. Cowater International’s work in Mali integrates analysis, technical assistance and service delivery to tackle some of the fundamental barriers to achieving inclusive and sustainable development outcomes.

In the cercle of Kéniéba, the Women and Children in Artisanal Mining Communities in Mali (FEMA) Project, funded by Global Affairs Canada, is addressing the needs of women and children engaged in artisanal and small-scale mining. FEMA is supporting analysis to identify the unique challenges of women, including inadequate labour, and health and safety conditions, as well as weak representation in mining sector governance and decision-making. A recent study produced by FEMA has identified key capacity building priorities to support local communities and promote women’s voices and roles in the small-scale mining sector.

The Promoting Girls’ Education in Mali (SCOFI) Project is assisting 90 schools in the Segou region of Mali to improve educational outcomes for adolescent girls aged 13-15. SCOFI has contributed to an increase in gross enrollment rate from 21% in 2018-19 to 28% in 2023-24. The number of students who have had to repeat their academic year during that same period has decreased from 39% to 34%, while investments in better water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure are improving learning conditions for adolescent girls. SCOFI is also promoting more inclusive educational environments by facilitating access to schooling for 87 internally displaced girls and 164 girls with disabilities. 975 teachers and school principals, across 90 schools covered by the Project, have received training on reducing gender barriers, tackling gender-based violence, promoting inclusive education and adequate menstrual hygiene management.
