Cowater Completes Major Water Supply Project in Burkina Faso News

Cowater and its partners recently completed the Water and Sustainable Growth Project in the Sahel Region, Burkina Faso. This 4-year, $17.4 M project funded by Global Affairs Canada, IAMGOLD and the One Drop Foundation was implemented in partnership with Burkina Faso’s “Office National de l’Eau et de l’Assainissement” and Ministry of Water and Sanitation .  Key results of the project include

  • Construction and handover to ONEA of a 230 m3/h treatment plant to supply drinking water to more than 60,000 people in the region.
  • Construction of more than 1,700 household latrines and 35 community latrine blocks promoting the elimination of open defecation for more than 12,000 people.
  • Adoption of good hygiene practices such as handwashing with soap and water at critical times by more than 16,000 people using a combination of the CLTS and SABC approaches.
  • The institutionalization of community-based project management of access to drinking water, based on the principles of inclusive governance.
  • Economic empowerment of women’s associations, farmer’s cooperatives that saw a 67% increase in their income
  • Women’s economic empowerment and leadership, by centering women at the heart of all project activities.

This project is one of many projects Cowater is currently implementing throughout the Sahel region.
