Cowater International is delighted to announce a new win
On October 28, 2024, Cowater International signed a contract with the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) to implement a five-year project (2024-2029) entitled “Local Adaptation to Climate Change in Nepal (LACC)”. The total budget of the Project is estimated at EUR 51 million, comprising EUR 18 million from the European Union, EUR 13 million from the Government of Finland, EUR 10 million from the Government of Nepal, and estimated EUR 5 million from the local governments and EUR 5 million from the communities both in cash and kind.
The consortium includes Cowater International Finland Oy and Cowater International SA with Finnish Environmental Institute (SYKE), Geological Survey of Finland (GTK), International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and DMI Pvt Ltd, Nepal. The Cowater expert team includes three international and 28 Nepalese experts.
The project will use a landscape approach which recognizes the interconnectedness of ecosystems and human activities, addressing complex environmental, social, and economic issues holistically. It aims to build climate-resilient livelihoods and inclusive management of terrestrial ecosystems by promoting climate-smart agriculture, agroforestry, and sustainable natural resource use, with a focus on food security, income improvement, and time efficiency, particularly benefiting women. It emphasizes community-driven water management practices for the conservation of water bodies, climate-resilient water services, and total sanitation. Additionally, the project seeks to strengthen governance at provincial and local levels, fostering inclusive systems that support federal structures, holistic planning, and collaboration with private sector, civil society, and academia for enhanced capacity, knowledge sharing, and integrated natural resource management.
LACC aims to support a total of 40 municipalities with capacity building and investments related to water resources management, water supply, irrigation, multiple-use water systems, environmental conservation and bio-engineering, agro-forestry, improved cooking stoves and improved water mills, and sanitation and hygiene, working closely together with the community groups such as Water Users and Sanitation Groups and Forest Users Groups. The project will mainstream human-rights based approach and cross-cutting objectives related to Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion, and climate resilience, low emission development, and protection of the environment with an emphasis on safeguarding biodiversity.
Cowater Finland (formerly FCG) has been working in Nepal since 1990, delivering technical assistance and investments in areas such as water resource management, climate change adaptation, gender equality and social inclusion, livelihoods and economic development.
