Poor governance undermines the sustainability of the extractive sector, leading to corrupt practices and fostering public mistrust. Disclosing tax payments and contracts to the public, while allowing for public audits of the sector, can improve the dialogue between government, companies and civil society. Cowater International experts advise governments on how to better disclose information and understand and apply international best practices and norms, such as the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative. We also help supreme audit institutions audit the sector and engage civil society to play a greater role in monitoring sector activity.
