Sub-Saharan Africa - Democratic Republic of Congo
The Environmental and Social Program (ESP) for the Pro-Routes project in the Democratic Republic of Congo was a four-year initiative undertaken with the financial support of the World Bank in partnership with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Works (MITP). The ESP was dedicated mitigating the environmental and social impacts of the CAD +500M major infrastructure Pro-Routes project (Projet d’appui à la réouverture et entretien des routes hautement prioritaires) on the national road network of eight provinces. This post-conflict reconstruction project aimed at assisting the Cellule infrastructures, Office des routes, Groupe d’évaluation environnementale au congo (GEEC), Institut Congolais pour la conservation de la Nature (ICCN) and the Environment Ministry (MECNT) in all aspects related to the implementation and supervision of environmental and social mitigation measures, especially intended to protect vulnerable biophysical and socio-economic environment impacted by Pro-Routes, including: the control of logging, poaching and protected areas; community natural resources management; environmental and social studies; and capacity building at national and sub-national levels. The ESP was implemented by managing and monitoring a CAD 20 million trust fund portfolio of initiatives, according to the World Bank contract award procedures.
