The Karnali-Bheri Integrated Rural Development Project (K‑BIRD) project operated in the mid-western region of Nepal in the Karnali and Bheri zones, one of the least developed areas of Nepal . The project sought to increasecapacity for self-sustaining economic, environmental and social improvements by assisting the Government of Nepal to implement its development strategy in three districts in the Karnali and Bheri zones. Cowater participated in Phase 2 of the programme (from 1986-1992) and supported project coordination, training, technical assistance, and the implementation of sub-projects. Improvements in economic, environmental and social conditions were achieved by carrying out sub-projects in various sectors including rural water supply, agriculture, forestry, small-scale enterprise development, rural health, education, road and track improvements.
