Social-Technical and Works Supervision Consultancy for Rural Water Service Delivery

Sub-Saharan Africa - Mozambique

2009-2013 | MCC | USD 5.4M

Through this project Cowater provided assistance to MCA-Mozambique and the National Water Department (DNA) by enabling them to accomplish their programmatic objectives in 13 districts. Through our work we addressed community participation, education and promotion of improved sanitation and hygiene practices using PHAST, CLTS and other participatory techniques; and technical support and management in the construction of 600 rural water points. We supported communities to meet eligibility criteria for access to water points; prepared technical design and specifications for construction of water and sanitation systems through service providers; provided supervision and quality control of construction activities; and enhanced sustainability of the infrastructure through improved hand pumps. As part of our work, we established asset management and mapping functionalities, created a georeferenced database for water points; trained communities on management and operations and maintenance of the water points; and formed a hand pump mechanics’ assocation to improve systems whereby rural communities can access spare parts for their pumps.
