The Unplanned Areas Upgrading and Employment Enhancement in Poor Neighbourhoods Programme implemented by Cowater International (formerly Transtec) targeted the enhancement of urban services and infrastructure in four informal areas of Cairo and Giza governorates, as well as improved the poor socioeconomic situation of the inhabitants. It supported the Social Fund for Development in the implementation of this project under three components: integrated upgrading programme (including the implementation of labour-intensive small projects for infrastructure, services upgrading and further innovative green initiatives); financial Services to Microfinance Institutions and SMEs in non-financial services, such as business development services, and enhanced access to credit for local economic development, employment and income generation; and capacity building measures to government and non-governmental stakeholders to support implementation capacity, innovation and skills development.
