November 2010: Publication on Water Governance Launched at Africa Water Week
A publication on water sector governance in Africa produced by Cowater International was officially launched at this year’s Africa Water Week in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Water Sector Governance in Africa publication provides an overview and an assessment of the state of water sector governance on the continent. It does so through an examination of a wide range of determinants of the quality of water governance in any given country. These include regulation, decentralization, aid delivery mechanisms, financial management, monitoring and accountability mechanisms as well as civil society participation, gender equality, alternative service provision, public-private partnerships and equitable service delivery. The report lays out a series of indicators and targets that have been developed to help donors assess the quality of water governance at the national and local level in partner countries.
The study that led to the publication was undertaken by Cowater on behalf of the African Development Bank with support from the Water Partnership Program. Africa Water Week 2010 ran from November 22nd to 26th.
