FEMA Project in the Spotlight: National Recognition for Its Commitment to Women in Artisanal Mining News

7 August, 2025

On July 3, 2025, in Bamako, the FEMA project (Women and Children in Artisanal Mining Communities in Mali) was celebrated during the inaugural edition of Sanu Muso, an event launched by the Ministry of Mines to honour women making a meaningful contribution to the development of Mali’s mining sector.

Implemented by Cowater International and funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), the FEMA project works at the heart of artisanal mining communities to strengthen women’s economic empowerment, participation, and visibility, while integrating gender equality into the local governance of the sector.

Among the ten women recognized by the Ministry, including engineers, technicians, legal professionals, students, and entrepreneurs, Ms. Farota Assetou Traoré, Gender Specialist for the FEMA project, was honoured for her outstanding contributions to improving the lives of women in gold mining areas of the Kayes region.

“This recognition means a lot to me. I fight every day to ensure women have a place in this sector, and this award gives me even more energy to keep going,” she shared emotionally upon receiving her trophy.

This award highlights the tangible impact of the FEMA project, which works hand-in-hand with women to transform a historically male-dominated industry into a more inclusive and equitable space. It also underscores the strong commitment of the Ministry of Mines, Global Affairs Canada, and Cowater International to advancing women’s empowerment and leadership in extractive value chains.
