Over 600 provincial civil servants in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa benefit from specialized training
Cowater International-implemented Strengthening Ethics and Integrity Project (SEIP), funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), conducted two one-day training sessions on discipline management for provincial departments in Mpumalanga, South Africa, in partnership with the South African Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA). Over 600 representatives from the Mpumalanga provincial departments attended the training events, which covered a range of topics, including the role of Labour Relations Officers and Managers in the disciplinary process, precautionary suspension, formulating charges, and managing the appeal process. This initiative aims to build the capacity of provincial departments to address case backlogs and long overdue suspensions, including supporting Labour Relations Officials to perform effectively their responsibilities.
Following this training, the DPSA’s Public Administration Ethics, Integrity and Disciplinary Technical Assistance Unit (PAEIDTAU) aims to enhance its capacity to implement the recently approved Discipline Management Strategy, strengthen the overall discipline management culture in the provincial departments, build capacity in the Human Resource community, raise awareness on gender and inclusivity considerations, and decrease the costs incurred by long overdue suspensions.
The Strengthening Ethics and Integrity Project (SEIP) is funded by Global Affairs Canada and aims to increase the accountability, efficiency and transparency of the public administration in delivering gender-responsive services to the South African public. This is accomplished through the provision of technical assistance to the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) in the design and operationalization of a new specialized unit in the Department, the Public Administration Ethics, Integrity and Disciplinary Technical Assistance Unit (PA-EID-TAU).
