Enhancing Equality between Men and Women in the EUROMED Region (EGEP)

Middle East and North Africa - Middle East and North Africa

2008-2011 | European Commission | EUR 4.5M

The regional EUROMED Gender Equality Programme (EGEP) was part of the follow-up to the Istanbul Conference. It aimed to promote four priority areas: actions to follow up on the Istanbul Process with a view to ‘promoting the role of women in society’; gender equality; combating gender-based violence; and enhancement of women’s image in the media. In order to achieve the programme’s strategic objectives, Cowater International (formerly Transtec) supported and reinforced dynamics that favoured de jure and de facto gender equality and that contributed to the promotion of women’s rights in the region; increased understanding and knowledge of violence against women; and ensured that the Istanbul ministerial conventions on ‘Strengthening the role of women in society’ were followed up.
