Understanding Afghanistan was a research and assessment activity undertaken with the financial support of the Government of the United Kingdom provided through the Foreign, Commonweath, and Devleopment Office.. The initiative included four outputs: (1) a political-economic analysis; (2) a strategic conflict assessment; (3) an economic growth diagnostic; and (4) a poverty, gender and social exclusion assessment. The project involved assembling a team of world-renowned experts on Afghanistan and post-conflict stabilization; developing a rigorous methodology applicable to continuous conflict monitoring; producing a comprehensive literature review; conducting extensive fieldwork in both Afghanistan and Pakistan; maintaining continuous communication with the agency to discuss evolving findings; and producing a final report.
