Water Supply for Low Income Communities

Latin America and Caribbean - Bolivia

- | United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) |

This project consisted of a pilot project (1987-1989) in sixty rural dispersed communities in the highlands of Bolivia (department of Oruro). The project installed locally produced handpumps and VIP latrines involving eight institutions including governmental, non-governmental and international organizations. Cowater was responsible for the development of the software component of this project:  this included project design, planning, software-hardware scheduling, participatory training for field workers, setting up of operations and maintenance procedures, and monitoring. Cowater also participated in a three person team which designed a subsequent $4 million dollar handpump project for the department of Potosi which would also serve rural dispersed communities in the Bolivian highlands and draw up on the experiences and lessons learned during the Oruro pilot phase.
