Launch of project on energy and economic growth in Burkina Faso News

15 November, 2018

In Burkina Faso, nearly 85% of rural communities don’t have access to electricity, which hinders the rural economy. This problem is even worse in the region of the Boucle du Mouhoun, where conventional and solar energy are a luxury for communities, especially for women. In fact, only 7% of the population has access to electricity. As energy is essential for a country’s economic and social development, the Government of Burkina Faso, supported by the Government of Canada, has launched a project called “Énergie et croissance économique durable dans la Boucle” (ECED-Mouhoun), which aims to help accelerate inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the Boucle du Mouhoun region through increased access to electricity.

In order to help the various stakeholders understand the project and take ownership of the expected results, Cowater International, the project’s implementing agency, organized a launch workshop on Thursday 15 November 2018. Under the presidency of the Canadian Embassy and the Ministry of Energy, this workshop brought together 200 participants from the central services (decentralized from the government), projects and programs from the region.

The ECED-Mouhoun project is a $18 million CAD project which will last until 2021. It is co-financed by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) ($16 million CAD), the Fonds de Développement de l’Électrification (FDE) of Burkina Faso ($1.3 million CAD) and Canadian firm Windiga Énergie (contribution in kind worth $148 000 CAD).
