Enhancing Women’s Leadership and Participation in Cuba’s Renewable Energy Sector News

22 November, 2023

The sixth work mission of the FORMER project, funded by the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada, has successfully concluded. The mission lasted from October 29 to November 11, 2023, and involved personnel from the Universities of Moa and Holguín, the Polytechnics José A. Boisan and Luis de Feria Garayalde, community leaders, and young students from the educational institutions.

The FORMER team facilitated an agenda of activities, including gender and energy workshops in Moa and Holguín, an inspection of the Las Merceditas Hydroelectric Plant, a workshop on Sustainable Agro-Ecotourism in La Melba, the first module of Rural Entrepreneurship for the formation of SMEs, and the first Capacity Building workshop for local trainers.

The activities involved approximately 450 participants, mainly women and girls from the province of Holguín. This degree of active participation of students, teachers, and rural populations reaffirmed the great potential of FORMER to generate a positive impact in these communities. In addition, an inspection of the equipment and materials acquired for the installation of solar water heaters in selected educational and health centers was completed. We anticipate that these systems will start operating in February 2024, benefiting more than 230,000 inhabitants in the province of Holguín.

FORMER reaffirms its commitment to the principles of efficiency, effectiveness, and transparency during the execution of the upcoming project phases. The socio-economic development of vulnerable areas in Cuba, through increased access to renewable energy and gender equity, is at the very heart of this collaboration project between Cuba and Canada.
