Inhambane Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project (IRWSSP), Phase II

Sub-Saharan Africa - Mozambique

2011-2016 | Global Affairs Canada | CAD 6.4M

The Inhambane Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project II was a five-year project funded by Global Affairs Canada. The first component of the project supported the Government of Mozambique for the construction of 126 rural water points, including solar-powered pumping systems, water supply systems for three small towns and Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and hygiene promotion in 449 communities, including the construction of 36,194 latrines and 300 demonstration latrines. Cowater supported the Government in monitoring the flow of funds and provided capacity building support to strengthen financial management and procurement systems. In the second component, Cowater provided technical assistance to strengthen the capacities of national and local governments, the private sector, and civil society in the form of consultative councils, WASH committees, households and community members themselves. Behavioural change was promoted using a participatory communication for development (C4D) strategy which covered equity, gender equality, HIV/AIDS awareness and environmentally-sustainable practices.
